How to join Open Book Club in July
I’m hosting an author event, a book club meeting, and am working on free copies of the book. Here’s everything you need to know.
What we’re reading:
We’re reading Loneliness & Company by Charlee Dyroff, a timely, beautifully observed debut novel set in near future New York about a young woman who finds herself tangled in a secret government project combating loneliness.
There are book club books I still think about everyday, like I Who Have Never Known Men and Hunchback. They ask questions about the ideas that connect all of us – what it means to be here, alive, together, human.
This month, we’re reading about agency, artificial intelligence, and the ways they complicate those ideas. If you haven’t been to a meeting yet, or if you like big questions, or if you’ve read enough girlhood essays on this app and you’re ready to talk about them… this is gonna be a good one.
Here’s the full description:
Loneliness & Company is an enchanting, gorgeously written novel about finding meaning and connection in a world beset by isolation.
Lee's future is set—a top student and professor-favorite, she's destined to land a job at a prestigious Big Five corporation. So when, upon graduating, she's assigned to an unknown company in New York instead, her life is completely upended.
In this new role, Lee's task is to gather enough research to train an AI how to be a friend. She begins online and by studying the social circle of her clueless, outgoing roommate Veronika. But when the company reveals it's part of a classified government mission to solve loneliness—an emotion erased from society's lexicon decades ago—Lee's determination to prove herself kicks into overdrive, and she begins chasing bolder and more dangerous experiences to provide data for the AI.
When we’re meeting:
The author talk with Charlee Dyroff is on Wednesday, July 23rd from 7-9 pm at the KGB Red Room. I've walked away from each author talk with an entirely new appreciation for the book, and they've added incredible depth and dimension to the book club meetings. I’m thrilled to host Charlee in July.
The book club meeting is on Tuesday, July 29th from 7-9 pm at Wandering Barman. The meetings are always a good time, and Stacia is guest hosting this one.
Here’s how to get the book:
I’m coordinating with the publisher to get us free copies of the book. There’s more info for paid subscribers here. The book is also included with Spotify premium :)
You can get event tickets and books on the website here!
Let me know if you have any questions. I’ll leave you with some cute pics from our July meeting at Selva :)
